If you plan to attend a prestigious college or university, you will want all the support possible to help you transform your dream into an achievable goal. Graduating from a college or university that has instant name recognizability can impact you for years after graduation, opening doors to important employment opportunities and offering lifelong personal and professional connections. The IELTS is one of two major exams used by universities in the English-speaking world to assess English language competency (the other exam is the Test of English as a Foreign Language, or TOEFL). The IELTS is a British examination, and it is therefore favored by many universities in the United Kingdom. The TOEFL is an American test, and many U.S. colleges favor it over the IELTS. A number of postsecondary institutions in both the United States and the United Kingdom, however, will accept either the IELTS or the TOEFL, and we advise all of our test prep clients to verify the English requirements of their preferred undergraduate or graduate program. If you have a choice between the IELTS and the TOEFL, the best solution is to try practice versions of both tests, ultimately favoring whichever one is easier for you. It is important to note that there are some clear differences between the two tests…speaking skills, for example, are evaluated by audio recordings on the TOEFL and by in-person interviews on the IELTS.
The IELTS is graded on a scale of 1 to 9, with higher scores reflecting a better understanding of the English language and a stronger ability to communicate effectively in this language. Schools such as Harvard, Stanford, MIT, and Caltech require a minimum IELTS score of 7 in order to obtain admission to undergrade programs, although incoming students routinely have scores higher than this. Most colleges and universities in the United Kingdom and the United States suggest an IELTS score of 6 to 7 in order to be considered competitive for admission.
Regardless of where you ultimately plan to attend college, Manhattan Review has you covered with a full range of IELTS prep services in Budapest. Our courses are offered in-person and online, and our instructors teach at various times to ensure there is a program available when it is most convenient for you. Meet a Budapest IELTS Tutor: Draco T.
Draco grew up in Windsor, Ontario (just across the U.S.-Canadian border from Detroit). Unlike many members of his family, he loved the cold, snowy winters and began playing hockey at a young age, spending his childhood on frozen ponds and lakes, skating with his friends. When he wasn't outdoors, he could be found "curled up with a book about a battle that happened long before I was born," he recalls with a laugh. Draco has loved history for as long as he can remember, particularly military history, and he spent hours reading about international military battles and the strategic decisions commanders did or didn't make. He firmly believes in the old adage that those who don't learn from history are doomed to repeat it, and he remembers being surprised when his peers weren't as interested in or excited by the past as he was. "So much has happened over the course of human civilization, and one small decision can influence huge global events," he explains. "We need to know our history now more than ever."
Draco's passion for the past led him to obtain his undergraduate degree in history from Boston University, followed by a graduate degree in teaching from Princeton. He completed his TESOL certificate at Columbia University and while he was in New York, he began working as a tutor for Manhattan Review. Draco loved working with students and being a part of their academic success, and he enjoyed having opportunities to teach in groups or one-on-one. After living in New York for five years, his husband was offered a job in Budapest, and the couple leapt at the chance to live overseas, experiencing a new city and culture. Draco transferred to Manhattan Review's Budapest office in 2018 and quickly became a favorite among students, especially those seeking the highest scores on the IELTS. In his spare time, Draco plays on a local hockey league, reads historical nonfiction books, and enjoys attending local festivals with friends.
