Attending an institution of higher learning that has instant name recognizability has the potential to impact you for years after graduation, opening doors to important job opportunities and offering lifelong personal and professional connections. The TOEFL is a standardized test designed to measure the English language abilities of non-native speakers seeking to enroll in an English-speaking university. This test is accepted worldwide by over 11,000 universities in more than 190 countries. The TOEFL consists of a group of tests, the most popular of which are the TOEFL iBT and the TOEFL Essentials. The TOEFL iBT requires 90 minutes to complete, whereas the TOEFL Essentials is more rigorous and requires three hours to complete. The TOEFL is composed of four sections—reading, listening, speaking, and writing. A score on the iBT version of the test will fall in the range of 0 to 120, while a score on the Essentials version of the test will range from 0 to 12. Many universities require proof of English language proficiency, and the most selective universities expect to see a TOEFL iBT score over 100. While every college varies in its specific requirements, the importance of a high TOEFL score cannot be overstated. In order to be competitive for the highest-ranking academic programs, it is imperative to demonstrate a strong performance on the TOEFL.

Meet a Budapest TOEFL Tutor: David P.
David is a TOEFL prep tutor and English as a second language (ESL) instructor with more than 15 years of experience as an educator. Originally from Canada, David spent his adolescent years in the United States, where he developed a love of baseball and a dream to attend to the University of California at Los Angeles. "My sister gave me a UCLA baseball cap for my fourteenth birthday," he recalls, "and I was so proud to wear it. Starting as a freshman in high school, I told everyone that someday I was going to attend that school." While David wasn't afraid to dream big, he also knew he had to be realistic. Gaining admission to such a prestigious university would require preparation and hard work on his part, but "I've never afraid of hard work," he says. "The one thing I can control is myself—how hard I do or don't work—and even though I couldn't control everything, I could control a lot of things related to getting into college." David worked hard all through high school, but it wasn't until his sister married someone whose first language wasn't English that he began to consider a career in teaching.
"My sister's husband was from Italy and really wanted to work on his English," remembers David. "We started working on it informally, little things at first, like vocabulary flashcards, but he really enjoyed learning and I surprised myself by realizing I really enjoyed helping him. Plus, I learned a lot of Italian in the process!" David graduated at the top of his high school class, and his SAT scores earned him a place at UCLA, where he obtained his bachelor's degree in education. David went on to complete his master's degree in educational transformation at Georgetown University with an emphasis on international education.
David then began an impressive career teaching at secondary schools around the world, although he found himself especially enjoying Europe. When a position opened up with Manhattan Review at our Budapest office, he jumped at the chance to explore a new city and culture. David has been in Budapest for eight years now, and his students praise his breadth of experience as a teacher and well-traveled individual. David always has a personal anecdote to make the material he's teaching more relevant, and his TOEFL prep courses fill up almost as quickly as they are announced. In his spare time, David enjoys writing short stories set in the towns he's visited, and once he has enough, he plans to publish a full-length book.
